Discovering the Wonders of Jordan: A Journey Through History and Culture"

It was quite the honor to be selected to attend Tauck Academy in Jordan last December. They did have another opportunity in the Canadian Rockies but I would have never heard the end of it from my husband if I picked that over Jordan.

Wadi Rum and Petra are two must-visit destinations in Jordan, both offering unique experiences that are sure to leave visitors awestruck. From the rugged beauty of the desert landscapes in Wadi Rum to the incredible ancient city of Petra, there is no shortage of stunning sights and experiences to be had in this beautiful country.

Wadi Rum is a protected desert wilderness area that covers over 700 square kilometers in southern Jordan. The area is known for its stunning red sand dunes, towering rock formations, and deep canyons. Visitors to Wadi Rum can take guided jeep tours, ride camels or horses through the desert, or even go hot air ballooning to get a bird's eye view of the breathtaking scenery. For those looking for a more immersive experience, there are also camping options available, allowing visitors to spend the night in the desert under a blanket of stars.

One of the highlights of Wadi Rum is visiting Lawrence's Spring, named after T.E. Lawrence, the British officer who led the Arab Revolt during World War I. The spring is surrounded by towering rock formations and offers a peaceful spot to rest and take in the natural beauty of the area.

Another must-visit destination in Jordan is the ancient city of Petra, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The city was built by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago and was once a thriving trade center.

The most iconic feature of Petra is the Treasury, a stunning temple carved into the side of a sandstone cliff. Visitors can walk through the narrow canyon known as the Siq to reach the Treasury, and then explore the many other temples, tombs, and buildings scattered throughout the ancient city. The Monastery is another must-see attraction in Petra, with its massive facade towering over 50 meters high.

Visitors to Petra can also take guided tours to learn more about the history of the city and its people. The Bedouin community, who still live in and around Petra, offer unique insights into the culture and way of life of the local people.
